What is the Come From Away whistle book?

The Come From Away whistle book requires 17 instruments, including Irish flutes in D and B-flat, low whistles, and a full range of tin whistles. Most productions struggle to source these instruments, which is why this complete rental set exists.

Rental Information

So much care has been taken to accurately represent the sound of Newfoundland in this show. The whistles and irish flutes are a very forward and vital sound for this story. Instruments like silver flutes, recorders, bansuris, native american flutes, bawu, etc. should NOT be used for this show. These instruments cannot, practically, ornament in the tradition of this music and can disrupt the timber of the soundscape. It won’t sound right.

I offer rentals of all 17 instruments, including uilleann pipes (if available). Rentals start at $325 a week (without pipes) plus shipping. However, if you are a smaller theater or a school, I am more than willing to work with you to get the price to fit within your budget. I have multiple options to make this work for your theater. Along with the rental, I have made a ‘Guide to the CFA Whistle Book’ that includes an erata list, ornamentation guide, gripping techniques, and other general tips for playing this book well that is especially useful to anyone who comes from a woodwind doubling background.

I am also available to talk with the players on phone or email with any questions they may have. In 2026, I will be playing my 7th production of this show. Even if you aren’t renting, feel free to reach out.
